Water is Water Right?

4/19/2019 (Permalink)

This is an example of a category 3 water loss.

Well actually no-all water is not created equally when it comes to water restoration.  Water losses are broken down into categories with each category requiring a different set of protocols for cleanup.  Here is an overview of those categories to better understand how the team of SERVPRO of Lexington/Thomasville brings your home back to pre loss conditions.

Category 1

  • A category 1 water loss is also known as “clean water”.  There is no significant contaminates that could cause sickness or discomfort.  An examples of a category 1 water loss is a broken water supply line.  This type of water loss generally does not require any significant variation to standard drying practices.  There should be no significant contamination that would prevent our team from restoring to press loss conditions

Category 2

  • A category 2 water loss is also known as “gray water”.  There is a significant degree of chemical, biological and or physical contamination that has the potential to cause illness with exposure. Category 2 water should not be allowed to stand in a structure for any extended period due to contamination concerns.  An example of a category 2 water loss is a washing machine overflow. Generally, most of the materials in a category 2 water loss can be restored after cleaning and may require treatment with antimicrobials.

Category 3

  • A category 3 water loss is also known as “black water”.  A category 3 water loss is extremely unsanitary and dangerous. This water carries pathogens and can cause illness if not properly protected. An example of a category 3 water loss is a sewer system backup.  Many of the porous materials will have to be discarded and those that can be restored will require extensive cleaning and decontamination.

As you can see one size does not fit all when it comes to water damage.  That is why it is so important to have a team you know and trust such as the professionals of SERVPRO of Lexington / Thomasville.  If you would like to know more about water damage or suspect you have a problem with your home give us a call at 336-224-2565 for your no cost assessment today.
